Ferry Bookings & RV Measurements: What You Need to Know

BC Ferries

Understanding your RV measurements is an important part of booking a ferry. Ferry companies require accurate vehicle dimensions to determine the correct booking category and pricing. Depending on how measurements are listed, your RV may appear larger than it actually is, which can create confusion when selecting the right option. Knowing how these measurements work will help you book correctly and avoid issues at check-in.

How to Book Your RV on a Ferry

Motorhomes should be booked as:

👉 Standard and Oversized vehicles

🚫 Not “over 5,500 kg registered GVW”

Choosing the correct category ensures proper pricing and avoids issues at check-in.

RV Measurements: Where to Find Them

You can find all required measurements—such as length, height and width—on your vehicle page under “Measurements.”

Make sure to use these exact numbers when completing your booking.

Ferry booking
RV Height

Ferry bookings may also require the total height of the vehicle.

Always use the height listed on your vehicle page, as this includes the full exterior height of the RV.

Ferry Booking
RV Length

Ferry bookings require the total length of the vehicle.

Always use the length listed on your vehicle page, as this reflects the full exterior length of the RV. If a length is shown as a range (e.g. 25–27 ft), always book using the maximum length.

RV Width

RV width can be confusing, as it is often listed including the mirrors.

At Fraserway, we provide both measurements:

  • Mirror to mirror: the full width including mirrors
  • Mirrors folded in: the width of the vehicle body

For example:

310 cm (10'2") mirror to mirror / 252 cm (8'3") with mirrors folded in

While the mirror-to-mirror width may appear over certain limits (such as 9 ft), the width with mirrors folded in may still fit within those categories.

Propane Use on Ferries

For safety reasons, propane must be turned off while on board the ferry.

Our team will show you exactly how to do this during your vehicle orientation on the day of pick-up, so you can travel with confidence.

Tips for a Smooth Ferry Experience

  • Enter your RV under the correct booking category
  • Use the exact measurements from your vehicle page
  • If a length range is listed, always book the maximum length
  • Be aware of mirror-to-mirror vs. folded-in width
  • Turn off propane before boarding
  • Allow extra time at the terminal
  • Contact the ferry provider if you’re unsure

Final Tip

Entering the correct measurements and booking category ahead of time helps ensure a smooth check-in and avoids unexpected delays or additional charges.
